Mother Teresa
Agnes was born in 1910. Her father was a wealthy man, but passed away while Agnes was a little child. Without her father, it was hard to run the family for her mother. She started sewing clothes to make money. Agnes used to go to the market to buy fruits, vegetables etc with her mother. She used to notice that her mother would not waste even a penny. Her mother used to bring the homeless to their home and help them out. Agnes followed her mother and started helping people. In the summer months when it was too hot, they moved to the mountains. There, Agnes found a Church and got connected to God. She used to spend a lot of time in the Church praying. Her brother used to tease her that she was spending more time in the church than at home. One day she heard God speaking to her. She heard the call and went to India and became a nun. Her name changed to Sister Teresa. There she worked as a teacher in a school called Loreta in Calcutta, India. Usually the food comes in trucks into the school. But some riots broke out around 1948 in Calcutta , India. So, Sister Teresa had to go out of Loreta to get some food for the children. There she saw lot of people suffering, getting hurt with the riots etc… She heard God speaking to her again giving her a call to help the poor. She left Loreta where she had spent some 20 years. Then she decided to live poor and help the poor and helpless. She started wearing a simple white 'sari'. She went to a slum called 'Moti Jihl'. There the condition of the people was real bad. She started a small school for the children there in open air under a tree, by writing on the sand! Slowly, a chair, a table came in… That's how the school for the poor children started there. Then one day, she saw a poor man almost in dying state. She took him to the hospital. The hospital refused to treat him. She said that she wouldn't go home unless he is treated. She got some medication for him finally and took him to the Town Hall and asked for a place to put him. They showed her the 'Dharmashala' where the devotees who came to worship Goddess Kali used to sleep. She took him there. Slowly more and more people like him were brought there. Sister Teresa started her own order and became Mother Teresa. More people joined her order. All of them used to wake early in the morning and say their prayers. Then they used to go out to do service until lunch time. At lunch time they used to come back, have some lunch and again go back for service. In the night they used to say their prayers and sleep. They built a building called "Nirmal Hriday" where they housed the people who were very close to death and treat them with love. They built a "Shishu Bhavan" to house little children who weren't fortunate enough to have their parents. This way Mother Teresa did a lot of service and her work spread to several other countries. She was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1979!
